Howard Forward 2019-2024 Strategic Plan Retrospective Assessment

Documenting Lessons Learned for Future Strategic Planning Efforts

Since its launch in 2019, the Howard Forward strategic plan has been an instrumental guiding force for Howard University’s growth, outlining ambitious goals to improve the student experience, enhance teaching and research excellence, continue our legacy of community impact, demonstrate efficiency in supporting our mission and values, and lay the foundation for long-term financial sustainability. As we conclude the plan five years later, we are proud of Howard’s many accomplishments towards these goals. Now, nearly five years later, it is vital to take a pulse: how can we continue to meet the evolving needs of our students, faculty, and staff?

About the Assessment

The Office of the Chief Strategy Officer is conducting a retrospective assessment of the Howard Forward 2019-2024 Strategic Plan. The assessment evaluates the plan's successes and opportunities for improvement. It continues the dialogue from President Vinson’s Bison Engagement Tour (“listening tour”) and will shape the university’s upcoming strategic planning.

In February 2024, robust stakeholder engagement began, first with faculty and staff who contributed to the creation of the university's strategic plan and then with those directly involved in its implementation. This engagement is ongoing, and all students, faculty, and staff are highly encouraged to participate in the retrospective assessment, as your insights are invaluable to us.
